Banksy and Faile at Dorotheum Art Auction

"Laugh now but one day we'll be in charge". This is what Banksy wrote on his stenciled monkeys some years ago. Now his art gets stolen from the street and appears in fine art auctions, next to Immendorff's and Lichtenstein's art.
Yesterday evening at the Dorotheum auction for contemporary art in Vienna many of Banksys screen prints did not sell. Also the piece of Berlin wall (estimate € 30.000 - 50.000) and the basement window that disappeared from Adalbertstraße did not sell. What did sell was the cardboard police officer with a Smiley on his face. The auction house named this piece "Happy Cop". Who laughs now is not just the sold Cop, also the auction house and the former owner are making good $$ with Banksy's work. Estimated with €35.000-45.000, the Cop sold for €61.300. That is much more than the Andy Warhol's that sold and nearly as much as Jörg Immendorff's monkey bronze sculpture.

The Faile gate, that used to be in Köpenickerstraße in Berlin, sold for €55.200. Now one of Dave the Chimp's street worms looks at us from the gate. His face doesn't look as if he feels like laughing, maybe what is going on now, with all this street art auction stopped him from laughing.

Brad Downey: Press Conference and not online on Hobnox

Today at 7pm is the press conference about the "Employ a vandal - Get a vandal" spraying action, that I wrote about. While the opening in KaDeWe takes place without him, Brad Downey will show his film and photos from his vandal action from last week at the "Urban-Art.Info Gallery" Brückenstrasse 1A, 10179 Berlin-Mitte.

Due to Brad's wish we had to take the feature about him offline from Hobnox after only a short time. For the people who saw a wrong Link on Wooster: I am Sorry about that, we changed the embed code and this was not Marc's or Wooster's fault.

UPDATE: Now things calmed down with Brad's and KaDeWes life. Lacoste is past. So here is the Hobnox report.

Employ a Vandal - Get a Vandal: Brad Downey dismissed by KaDeWe

American (Street) Artist Brad Downey followed the invitation of Lacoste to create a window display for massive department store KaDeWe in west Berlin. With the motto "Employ a Vandal - Get a Vandal", last week thursday he took a fire extinguisher filled with green paint and sprayed the windows from one side to the other. Media first thought is was a terrorist attack. Later they thought it was a PR campaign by Lacoste to promote their 75th anniversary. Lacoste and KaDeWe got a lot of media. Brad Downey, who wanted to exhibit the film of this action in his window display, is not allowed to exhibit anymore. Dave the Chimp wrote about it on his Fotolog, so did Rebel Art. I am at the opening tomorrow, probably at least...

Play Street Artist with Tate Modern

Here is a photo of the westside from Tate Modern building. The work is by Brazilian Os Gêmeos (the twins), Nunca and on the right from Blu. You find more detailed photos here. And if you feel inspired now and want to virtually spray, check this (for me a bit to didactic) Street Art game.

Street Art on Tate Modern

It is nothing new that Street Art goes Fine Art. An original Banksy easily costs you more than a Warhol. Art dealers, collectors and celebrities like Christina Arrgguilera are going wild for what used to be the street's own. To proof that Street Art arrived in the art world this week London's Tate Modern opens it's Street Art exhibition. And because it is still called STREETArt, they commissioned Os Gemeos and Nunca from São Paulo, Blu from Bologna, Faile from New York, JR from Paris, Nuria and El Tono from Madrid and Sixeart from Barcelona to paint their iconic river façade. Since I could not make it to London this week, I posted a photo from Romanywg's Flickr photostream with Sixeart, JR and Faile's work. Check out his Flickr for the Blu and Os Gemeos paintings.

This is the trailer for CLTR/CTRL, the new Hobnox channel. I am looking forward to your suggestions what these eight letters stand for.

MUTO: Blu's magic street animation

Blu rocks! He painted this animation last year at walls in Baden and finished it this year at the walls of Buenos Aires. You can see more of Blu's work in the Street Art exhibition in Tate Modern that opens next week in London. At this very moment he is probably there, painting.

How to dance at a rave

The weekend is coming, rave time is coming. But before you leave the house for serious dancing, practise your rave moves with LeRoy at home. I am still perfectionizing my "Chernobyl Child playing Ping Pong" (at 4:50 mins).

Space is the place II: Sunglasses by Maison Martin Margiela

My eyes like it vintage. But if I would have to pick a pair of contemporary sunglasses for them today, I'll take l'INCOGNITO. These shades are the result of a collaboration between Maison Martin Margiela and Italian eyewear company Marcolin. Released last October they are the first pair of sunglasses that Belgian designer Martin Margiela ever created.

And what goes best with them? This hand made disco ball top of course. It is from the Maison Martin Margiela artisanal collection and took 45 hours to make.

Sunday Sports: Indiana Jonesing

I love cities - the bigger, the better. But sometimes it is time to get back (in)to the roots. This weekend Markus, Steffi and I played Indiana Jones in the nature reserve Mecklenburgische Seenplatte. We went canoeing and camped in the forrest. With our batteries now being charged with fresh air, we are ready for more urban adventure.

Space is the Place: Discos Capablancas first release

This is what we were waiting for: Discos Capablanca. The record label from Hugo Capablanca aka DJ Fuck Hugo, released it's first vinyl. 500 limited, hand silkscreened and numbered records with artwork by Andreas Golder (White Cube Gallery, London). The unicorn logo is designed by Nomad. When you put the needle on the record you get to hear tropical cosmic disco in slomo. The bass weights you through a journey accompanied by a Marimba (or something more Caribian than that). You can listen to Hugos and T.Keelers rework of the track "Jungle" by Grackle on Discos Capablanca's Myspace. There you also find a contact where you can order one of the precious limited edition.

These New Puritans in Berlin

Yesterday the hype-Brit-band "These New Puritans" played a short but strong gig in Magnet. Even though they played without the support of keyboarder Sophie Sleigh-Johnson it was a good gig. Their secret weapon is drummer George Barnett. He plays like a robot on speed. That is why the gig only lasted around 25 Minutes. The last words of singer Jack Barnett were: This is These New Puritans 2008, you were part of history. After The Strokes played their first 25mins gig world tour, they did break through. I wouldn't mind to see These New Puritans playing more songs on big stages soon.

Slideluck Potshow

Bring your own and watch other people's slides. This is how you can describe Slideluck Potshow. Right now the second Berlin one is still going in Friedrichshain. Visitors prepared food, international photographers and a few artists prepared a five minute slide show for the 150 people in RAW Tempel. Due to organizer Casey Kelbaugh the buffet that the Berlin visitors assembled, was the best one he saw so far. Congrats Berliners, now the Torontians and New Yorkers have to cook hard on topping our food. The next dates: Portland: 10 May | Toronto: 24 May | NYC: Summer

Love in USA

Sorry I am late. The Coachella festival was already more than a week ago. But maybe there are other people out there who, like me, can't get enough of spring feelings and seeing hot people in hot sun-/glasses. Eddie from the Streetstyle Blog Stylesightings (California) saw loads, when he took these awesome flics at the festival. Check his Blog to see which of his photos I didn't steel to show you.

Lezzies on X

Do you know this kind of evening: You had no plans, a friend calls you up, you agree to see this band you never heard of ('course the entree is only 8€). And than the unexpected happens: you really god damn like the band, dance the whole show and afterwards you are super sad that they don't have the band's shirt in your size anymore and you buy a CD instead? Well, I just came home from the Lesbians on Ecstasy show in Festsaal Kreuzberg. I bought the Remix CD with the hope it is as good as the Le Tigre Remix album. Their show is a mix between DeathMetallElectroSynthiePunk and it rocks!

Sunday Sports: Shoe shopping

For ages I already wanted a pair of wedge heel shoes. After I saw a lady with a red pair of suede wedge heels at the big gallery opening day, friday in Berlin, it was about time to score. Since this sunday exceptionally the shops in Berlin opened, I found my pair at Vagabond. Still looking for the red suede ones though.

Talking about shoes... Every so often I have a look on the web to find the Claw Money Nike High Vandal (of course only the black one). Today I found this little animation about the sneaker that designer and graffiti girl Claw Money made for Nike:

125 years of love stick: The Lipstick's birthday

Today is a red and glamourus birthday. It is the 125th anniversary of the lipstick. So to say not of lip colour. It is more than 5000 years ago, that women discovered that they get what they want easier with red colour on their lips. The stick is rather young with it`s 125 years. To celebrate this day I can only say: girls, get your redest lipstick out and watch this report.
